This economy crisis has many families working together to find ways to reduce their expenses. People are getting creative as to the various ways that their family can save a few pennies and yet still enjoy what life has to offer. For some families they are taking a slightly different approach and are turning to “green” alternatives to keep their family budgets on the positive side, and to do something positive for our world.

When we teach our children to take care of our planet, we are giving them the valuable information that they will need for helping to preserve our world. An important lesson that we are all learning because of this economy crisis is to limit waste, and that includes wasting our money. By being a little more conscientious and doing some basic stuff around the house, you and your children could see how saving, cost-cutting, recycling and reusing, can help to increase your family’s budget. Try these 5 simple tips in your family:

Find alternative energy sources for those little handheld electronics instead of traditional batteries. Traditional batteries actually hurt our environment because of the toxic acid that they can leak into the ground. So, instead of buying battery after battery, use alternative energy sources such as rechargeable batteries or a solar powered charger, which works based on free sunlight! You won’t have to worry about trying to find batteries that you can buy for cheap because you will always have battery power. So, your family should definitely see a saving by using these energy sources.

Make conserving water a priority in your household. This economy crisis is serving to help us to appreciate our natural resources a bit more and we should do our best not to waste water. So, parents can teach their kids to reduce their water consumption by cutting off the water when taking care of their teeth and by cutting showers to a maximum time of 5 minutes. Your family water bill could really be reduced by having the kids make these small changes.

Get creative with conservation. Catch that excess shower water and the free rainwater into a container that you can buy for cheap. Then, use that water for all types of stuff that doesn’t require sparkling fresh water like watering your plants. It’s important to find alternative uses and ways to get the most out of our natural resources. But, it’s also great saving on the water bill in the process.

Do teach the kids to enjoy and take full advantage of sunlight. Tell them to turn off the lights when they are not using a room and to open the blinds or curtains to let the sunlight in. Sunlight is a free energy and light source. Learning to use and appreciate it now could make a difference as your child gets older in the way that they view energy. This economy crisis is making it important for all of us to take a different approach with certain things in our lives. The energy that your family saves by not running the electric lights all day could result in a much lower energy bill, which means more money left over in your family’s household budget! Plus, less energy consumption is very important for our environment.

Make frugal recipes a family mainstay. Buy for cheap produce and dairy from your local farmers market to support local business and help our environment at the same times. Most farmers markets have organic foods which means that they do not use those pesticides that are harmful to the environment. Yet, by planning your family’s meals with frugal recipes and these fresh veggies and fruits that you can buy for cheap, you will also be helping your family’s food budget . So, buy local to save.

Your children can learn to understand the importance of going green and will follow your lead on environmental issues. Teaching them to work to save our planet and to help your family by doing things to conserve to save money are life lessons that they will need in years to come. Teach them now and, once the world is through this economy crisis, they will know how to do their part to help to reduce environmental risks. With your guidance, they will know how to care for their family while maintaining a financially and “environmentally” sound budget!
